Seminars & Conferences (S&C)
Due to difficulties from the pandemic, online engagement has been essential. Therefore, screen time dedicated to our events required unique opportunities. For example, we hosted a Trainee Contract Application crash course delivered by Gordon Chung and successful trainees from magic circle, silver circle, US, and regional firms. Members who are pursuing a career as a solicitor, benefit from application breakdowns, interview advice, and diverse perspectives in the industry.
With mini-pupillages and opportunities at the Bar in most cases being offered exclusively online, our events focused on inviting several heads of chambers to explain how students can garner the needed experience before embarking towards a career at the Bar.
We’ve assembled an LL.M panel comprised of students and professionals for members seeking further education or an interest in academics. We aim to provide our members with contacts and a personal network for any of their endeavours.

Academic Activities (AA)
From hosting CV workshops to insight sessions on growing practice areas, our approach this year is to introduce our members to interesting areas in law in tandem with research opportunities to diversify their legal knowledge. We have implemented an Academic Series to assist with online learning. We also offer workshops for assignments, exams, and note taking exercises to enable members to excel in the new online learning landscape.

Student Trainee Exchange Programme (STEP)
STEP has been a pillar of opportunity for our members as it generates exclusive internships all over Europe. We provide application workshops and insight into the leading traineeships for our members.

Moot Court Competitions (MCC)
Engaging in moot court competitions is a vital tool to develop advocacy skills throughout academia. We run workshops to provide tips and tricks, and most importantly a forum for discussion about style and structure to deliver a strong submission. We are focused on hosting local events in Birmingham and collaborating with neighboring local groups for future competitions.

The Refugee Project
One of the major goals this year has been implementing The Refugee Project. Inspired by ELSA Nottingham’s initiative, our committee has introduced the project to provide support to our surrounding refugee community. Led by Melanie Kahwaji, we have invited leading professionals to provide insight into the difficulties facing refugee and asylum seekers. As the project is in its first year of implantation, we are securing partnerships and establishing programs for our members to volunteer and gain experience.
