Academic Activities (AA)
We organised a debate for all students (not only law!) interested in arguing for or
against” legalised assisted suicide”. All participants were awarded a participation certificate signed by our Head of Law School. (The winner’s certificate received distinct recognition). This event successfully allowed students to enhance their critical thinking about a polarising topic, it provided an opportunity to develop skills such as public speaking and argumentation.
Seminars & Conferences (S&C)
Paths in International Law
We have invited three lawyers to come and tell their career in International Law. Rae Lindsay (Partner – Clifford Chance) – International Law and Litigation; Oonagh Sands (Senior Associate – Fietta LLP International Law; Srishti Jain, (Associate – Lalive) International Commercial Arbitration, and Investment Arbitration. It was a very beneficial evening for our ELSA members and other Westminster students; all questions were answered during the event and more informally during the casual networking that followed.
We had the pleasure to collaborate with ELSA KCL on the 8 th Edition of ELSA Day. Together we organised a conference the 19/20 theme: Freedom of Expression Online. The event explored legal, philosophical and political aspects of the topic. Additionally, the evening provided an opportunity for ELSA members form University of Westminster and King’s College London to network and create connections between the two Local Group.
“Beyond a reasonable doubt” A career in Criminal Law
We have invited three lawyers to come and tell their career in Criminal Law. Jo Sighu QC – one of the country’s leading criminal law barrister known for his experience in high profile homicide cases. Sandra Paul – Partner at Kingsley Napley, represented high profile individuals including politicians, sports and media personalities. Ian Powell – Criminal defence lawyer at UK’s leading criminal defence firm Tuckers Solicitors. The event was very enriching for all attendees; the reality of practising Criminal Law can sometimes be very chilling and our panel was delighted to answer our members’ difficult questions.
Student Trainee Exchange Programme STEP
To honour our commitment to serve our members to the best of our ability, we focused on increasing engagement for STEP at the University of Westminster. We organised application workshops to help future applicants and our VP STEP made herself available for informal 1-on-1 support sessions.
At ELSA Westminster, we believe in developing a strong network. As such, we use social events to provide opportunities for our members to meet students from other ELSA groups or other Societies at UoW. We have organised a “Law Societies social event” with other Societies at UoW as part of our University’s Freshers’ Week; and taking advantage of the proximity of other Local Groups in London we have organised several bar and club nights open to members from different ELSA groups.
